DENTAL HEALTH
In an era when there is so much talk about medical care and the health insurance crisis our country is facing the subject of dental care has become lost. The fact is that there is over 100 million Americans or one third of our country is without dental insurance. More that twice as many as have no medical coverage.
It is understandable that people find health insurance to be a more pressing need. At any time we can find ourselves in need of care that can change our quality of life or even prevent death. Hospital bills can quikly bury a person in a sea of debt they can never recover from.
What many don't think about is the need for dental coverage. Why be concerned? Most figure that the worse thing that can happen if you put off taking care of a dental problem is pain and more expensive treatment. A dentist visit can be expensive but nothing compaired to a hospital stay.
There is also the fact that dental insurance is expensive but seems to be full of limits. There is a limit on the annual benefit so it runs out just as you really start to need it. there are also many exclusions so any treatment not considered medically necessary isn't covered and you get to pay 100% out of your own pocket.
Insurance or not dental care is very important. Many people don't realize that there are much more serious health risks that can occure if care is ignored.
1. Plaque on your teeth can release bacteria that cause pneumonia
2. Gum Disease can release toxins that cause
A. Heart Disease
B. Diabetes
C. Colon Cancer
D. Premature Birth
E. Hedgkins Lymphoma
F. Chronic Heartburn
G. Osteoporosis
3. Correcting a persons bite can treat headaches, neck & shoulder pain and ringing in the ears.
4. Infections outbreaks on the teeth can cause certain types of hair loss.
5. Oral exams can detect oral cancer in the early stages where it is very treatable.
There have been cases where infections have spread from a tooth to the brain and caused death. These are thing we don't think about when we have a tooth ache but it is very real.

CBS News recently ran a story on the dental care situation in our country. There is a lot of attention paid to the 47 million Americans without medical insurance, but there is a lot less talk about the more than 100 million without any type of dental coverage. This is a terrible problem because many don't realize just how important dental care is to a persons overall health. If ignored, bacteria & infections in the mouth can lead to things like heart disease, diabetes & Chronic Heartburn just to name a few.
Not long ago there was a story in the
news about a 12 year old boy in Baltimore that died because an
infection in his mouth spread to his brain. This incident got a lot of
press but sadly it isn't an isolated event. Tooth decay is the number
one childhood health issue and thousands of school days are lost every
year due to tooth pain.
This problem isn't only with children.
Harvard University did a study & asked people "If there was
universal health care what would you take care of first?" the number
one answer, Teeth.
When ever there is free dental care offered
people line up. That is where this news story begins. In Colorado a 1
day free dental clinic was set up with dentists from around the country
donating their time. People started getting in line at 2:00 AM &
kept showing up all day.
Inside they found grade school children
that had never been to the dentist and had been experiencing pain for
some time. There were also adults that had been putting off visits for
some time. In every case the reason was money. One mother, who's care
would have cost $1,000 said that is about the same as her rent. When
faced with the decision she has to choose to put a roof over their
heads.
This is a common dilemma, Dental care costs money so people
put it off until they are in pain. By that time the cost of care has
gone up to a price that they definitely can't afford. This has lead
experts to say that we are in danger of becoming a third world nation
in the area of dental health. For the richest nation in the world this
is inexcusable.

Recently ABC News did a story titled "Dental Care Decay" on Deamonte Driver, a 12 year old boy from Baltimore who died due to an infection which spread from a bad tooth to his brain. With this report they shinned a light on the dental insurance crisis in America. There are more than 100 million Americans without dental insurance. Some are fortunate enough to get on Medicaid or programs that some states have but most dentists won't accept these plans.
When confronted about this problem the government said that they provide benefits and pointed the finger at dentists who refuse to accept Medicaid. The dentists say they can't afford to take Medicaid because of low reimbursement & slow pay. At the present time this stalemate shows no sign of being resolved.
In 2000 the Surgeon General reported that tooth decay is the most chronic ailment among children. A lot of people are in a tight budget and think that their & their children's teeth are healthy so they put off visiting the dentist. By this time there is pain the care needed has gotten a lot more expensive & already financially stretched families are left in a difficult situation. The result is millions of adults & children living with tooth pain that can easily turn into much more serious health problems.
Thousands of school days are lost every year due to tooth pain and experts say that as a nation we are in danger of having the dental health of a third world nation. As the richest country in the world this is unacceptable.
